Due to the Covid 19 virus we will be canceling the April 16, 2020 meeting. Wes Miller of rural Hiawatha had been scheduled to continue his immigration across Kansas talks. We will reschedule this meeting at a later time.
Lynn, director of the Brown County Historical Society will be our guest speaker. She will be talking about the Historical Society and what has been happening with the Museum, the Ag Museum and Windmill Lane.
The always entertaining Joel Meyers and his sister Jill Frees will be the program for June. Joel will be giving a program titled LAND HO! Land can be one of the best clues to use when tracing family lineage and one of the most frustrating. Is the land east of the Mississippi or west? Is it a Military Bounty land, Homestead Act land, Mexican land grant, Railroad right away or some other purchase? What are and how did surveyors use chains, links, furlongs, rods, poles, perches, miles, leagues, labor, acres, and arpents? What are metes and bounds? These and many other questions about land purchases, sales; measurement, titles, etc. will be answered. (The answer to “doing a Land Office business” will be explained!)
Note: if you have a protractor, bring it, there will be a practice session after the class.
